Just got my new sails for my 1999 260. I ordered a loose footed main and now I need to come up with a better arrangement for the outhaul. Having the control at the base of the boom makes it difficult to make adjustments. Has anyone come up with a better arrangement? Thanks for any input...

Calvin, Exit the outhaul at the back of the boom

I added an outhaul traveler car to the top of the boom. Internally I run 2 triple blocks. The outhaul line exits the bottom of the boom through an exit block about 3 feet forward from the end of the boom. I then run the outhaul line back to the end of the boom through a ronstan swivle block (AF5). The swivle cleat hangs down from the boom in about the middle of the cockpit. Its real convenient to reach up and adjust the outhaul from any angle in the cockpit. Ted

Sounds good...

Ted, It sounds like you have installed a pretty sophisticated system. Do you by any chance have any pictures?

Run to cockpit

I have a solid vang, jiffy reefing, halyards, cunningham and outhaul are run to blocks at the mast base and then out to deck organizers and then back to the cockpit.

I have a problem with the current system

Part of the problem is that the current system I have where the line is accessed at the base of the boon does not work well. The blocks at the end of the boon have deteriorated and it is very difficult to get any movement. (Replacing them appears to be somewhat of a task) Moving the line to the cockpit to me would just make it more difficult. This appears to be a poor design from the getgo. My thought is to secure a line on one side of the end of the boom, run it thru the sail to a block on the other side of the boom, and then forward on the outside of the boon to a closed jam cleat. Sounds easy but I am left handed!

Calvin, See diagrams from Harken.com

http://www.harken.com/rigtips/outhaul.php You can choose which system suits you best. I chose outhaul system #4. The only difference is instead of running it to a standard cleat I ran the outhaul line to a swivle cleat. Like you my original outhaul just didn't work worth a darn. Once I upgraded to a loose foot main I really wanted to have good outhaul control and easy access to the outhaul line. I'll take some pictures this weekend and post them. Ted

Thanks

Thanks, one picture or diagram is worth a 1000 words, at least some of the time.

How do you mount padeyes inside the boom.

This would be a nice mod for my H26. How would you mount the padeyes in the boom?

Externally

I am planning on using the external system with 2 blocks and a jam cleat rather than a cam cleat. I have purchased all the materials and should have it installed in the next 10 days. The ideal of mounting hardware inside the boom makes me ill...
