It's time for me to get a new outboard for my 1982 Hunter 25. I believe the original one is a Johnson 7.5 and it is as old as the boat. Would I be underpowered if I purchased the Tohatsu 6 horsepower engine? Should I move up to the 8 hp? Thanks for the help.

What type water do you usually sail?

If you wanted to save $ and are on inland lakes w/ little current/tides; use the motor for just leaving and entering a dock, the 6 would probably work. Otherwise, the 8 would be a better choice. It's a twin cylinder - smoother - and you can get them w/ electric start.

Tohatsu 8

We have the two stroke model on our '90 27-2. It pushed us upwind in 30kn winds at 3/4 throttle, so we can't complain. Don't know about the newer 4-strokers but ours never fails to start. Your 25 is not much lighter than out 27-2 in either ballast or displacement. I think the 8 is more apppropriate, but be prepared for people suggesting the 9.9 or 15 models. If you do get a 2-stroke remember that they should not be run at low throttle for extended periods. You CAN have too much engine. I've also seen people post issues with mount failures or suggest way too elaborate means to reinforce the transom.

We have a Tohatsu 8 HP - Great Motor!

The two stroke Tohatsu 8 is a great motor. Ours is the electric start that also has a 10 amp charger, that comes in very handy since all we run are cabin lights. Unfortunately this engine is no longer made so if you are looking to buy a new one you will have to go with a four stroke. A friend of our just bought a new Tohatsu four stroke 8 and it is VERY nice. The two storke is very light at 68 lbs, the four stroke is 91 lbs. still not bad compaired to the Hondas.
