Does anyone know how much weight the outboard bracket can take? I need to replace the original 2-stroke Nissan 9.9 outboard that came with a used Hunter 26.5 The Law here says I have to buy a four stroke. I know the four strokes weigh more. My owner's manual doesn't say anything about the outboard bracket, it mentions a deisel that the boat never had. Does anyone know how much weight the bracket can take? Also should I go with Yamaha or Honda? I know I want a Honda or Yamaha and automatic tilt because of the extra weight. The Honda dealer says Honda's do not have automatic tilt for less than 40hp. I've heard that you can outfit the Honda with an automatic tilt from westmarine. Any suggestions?

Mat, The 4 stroke engines are not much heavier

than the same hp. 2 stroke. Probably 10 lbs. You didn't say what size bolts or how many mount your motor mount to the boat. If they are 3/8 inch bolts with a solid backing on the transom then a 4 bolted mount should be fine...unless... the mount is not a beefy wooden plate. If it is a stamped metal assembly or hinged and extendable type then it could be suspect. Your West marine store should be able to advise you on this. Honda makes a very fine product and I have owned their cars, lawn mowers, lawn tractors and presently still use their 1983 4 stroke outboard of 10 hp. But, I would think that any other fine manufacturer of outboard motors that already equips their motor with the lift devise you want, as a standard option, would work out very well. Why try to create a system if one is already available? Ray S/V Speedy Ray

Thanks Ray

Thanks a lot. Just for the record. I just came from the westmarine site and it would be cheaper to go with Honda and buy the power tilt at westmarine. But your right that it does make sense to go with the Yamaha because it is already in there. thanks again

I think the law says....

New pollution regulations in California prohibit the sale, purchase or use of two-stroke outboards built in 2001 and beyond. Any engines manufactured prior to the year 2001 can still be bought, sold and used in California. Do you NEED a new engine?

4 stroke engine

Mat, The 3rd year i owned the boat i replaced the outboard with a yamaha 4 stroke. i was concerned about the added weight and added a small stainless angle bracket between the bracket and the transom. It was not too visible and added a little extra support. I loved the yamaha, the fuel efficiency was awesome, it had a good charging capacity and it was super quiet. Hondas are just as good. they've been making 4 strokes longer than anyone. Good luck. Bill
