Outboard Weights

I am considering an outboard to my 26 sailboat as a back up if my old diesel should pack up. My boat's recommendation is 6-9hp outboard. I notice that a 9.9 hp outboard weights about the same as a 15 hp and I would like to consider a 15 hp . Is that ok? By the way what is the lightest 15 hp outboard in the market? Thanks Wong

always carry a spare?

Wow, you really don't trust that little oil burner, do you? You might have to repaint the waterline after adding the extra weight!

9.9

I have a Nissan 9.9 outboard aboard my 26.5. The littel sucker, when working good, goes aboat 5.5 knots. Don't forget you can only go so fast with a motor, or sail for that matter, unless your boat planes. Not to seem rude, but I alwas considered my outboard to be my backup to my sails. Not vice-versa. Good luck. Torrence J. Jenkins

9.9

I don't think you will gain anything above a 9.9 unless your bucking very strong headwinds. My H26 has an 8hp that "serves as the backup to my sails" - just fine , and gets me into the slip.

9.9 vs 15HP

Most of the major manufacturers 9.9 and 15's are the same basic motor with timing, RPM and possible carburetion changes. I bought a 15 HP for my Catalina 27 because I regularly tow a dinghy. I can now tow my dinghy at hull speed. I never need to run it much past 1/2 throttle if I don't have it in tow. You need to get the bigest diameter prop with the shallowest pitch to optimize performance. The standard prop is for a planing hull.

outboard

Just bought and installed a 15 hp Evinrude 4 stroke on my Hunter 23 - electric start and motor controls. I was tired of leaning over the stern to dock the boat. It's great and easy with everything at your finger tips. I went with the 15 hp due to the fact that the weight was the same as the 9.9 and now I can run the engine at 3/4 throttle and get 7.1 knots speed. I don't use the motor much but it's there when I need it. I am also interested in cruising the ICW in the future and there you will need an engine for a lot of the trip (this I was told, time will tell!)

Outboard Motor Attachment

Have 15hp Evenrude on Hunter 25 and all works fine. However, make sure it gets installed properly so that it can be stowed above water line when sailing. Previous owner had motor on adjustable mount but when I tried to move it to the stowed position, I broke the throttle cable and the shifting mechanism since there was no allowance for movement of those cables in the down position. Previous owner left motor in water while sailing. Talk about a drag!

Outboard Prop problems

I have a Yamaha 4-stroke 9.9 hp on my Hunter 26. Recently we changed docks so that we're tying up on the port side. I now find that when I try to back out of the slip under power, the torque shoves my stern to port into the dock, while, of course, my bow wants to come starboard into the neighboring boat -- all this with virtually no reverse motion! This was not a noticeable problem in our prior slip, but there I was tied up on the starboard side and wanted to swing my stern to port a little anyway. I am thinking that the propellor may have too coarse a pitch, resulting in too much "P-factor" before it can get my square-sterned, displacement-hulled boat moving. Does this make sense? Any recommendations? Any other ideas?

engines

Most sailboats in the 26 range generally will take up to a 9.9. Putting a 15 hp motor may be to much power and at full throttle, you may be plowing throught the water and will have to throttle down. Also, make sure what is the highest engine hp the motor mount csan take as there are limits which you should check into. Another thing, some 15 hp motors are the same engine block as the 9.9 for example the Tohasu and Nissan
