I have a 2001 Johnson 6hp 2 stroke @ 58lbs on a Hunter 25. Im looking to buy a 2001 9.9hp Tohatsu 4 stroke. The Tohatsu is 120 lbs., is this too heavy for my boat? Jeff

I don't think it is too heavy for your boat.

I do think that you will find that taking the motor off the boat and putting it on may require some more people to accomplish. You should also take note of the water line before the old engine is removed and compare that to the line once the new engine is in place. You can reposition some weight (crew and supplies) such that you keep the boat balanced enough or reduce sail as needed. Is your old outboard a long shaft or 15"? The longer shaft engines are better for sailboats because of the rocking motion they can make with wave interaction. I helped a friend lift a fairly new 9.9 HP engine off of his H25 off his boat because the water pump seemed to be failing and the engine waw not discharging cooling water as it should. An astute measure as it turned out as if the engine would have been seized or have overheated on us had we gone out with the boat while counting on the engine. Just make sure all systems are working before you put the new engine under load (cooling, fuel, steering, leaking).

Are you sure about the Tohatsu weight?

My new Tohatsu 9.8 long shaft said 85 lbs. on the shipping waybill, and that included the box and the accessories. The weight stated for the 25" ultra long shaft is 88.2 lbs. Maybe the manufacturer has reduced the engine weights in the past few years? My 9.8 Tohatsu is used on a G-26 with an open transom. It replaced a much lighter Chrysler 10 that lasted over 30 years on the boat. As CalebD said, you may have to redistribute some of your boat weight to get a level water line. Sure is a good feeling knowing you have a reliable engine that will get you through the chop.

weight verified

NADA shows dry weight @ 114lbs. I also failed to mention, its electric start. I think the level issue will be OK. Even with the 20" long shaft the outboard is a little too high out of the water any way, and its light in the aft anyway.

A friend of mine had a Hunter 25

that he put a 10 hp Honda on (about the same weight at the Tohatsu) and it worked fine and was not too heavy for the boat. Since he also upgraded his OB mounting bracket to a heftier model at the same time, he mounted it in the center of the stern rather offset to one side or the other. My guess is that is a better place for it, but probably only makes minimal steering differences. But as noted below, he did need two people to get the motor on/off the bracket.

I can't attach or remove my Honda 8hp outboard...

by myself. I don't know the exact weight of it but I think it's close to your tohatsu. If your 25 is built like my 27 it should handle the weight just fine. Make sure your bracket is rated for a four stroke of that hp and weight. Manny

Do I need to reinforce the connection.......

It already has a nice stainless mounting bracket and the rating for weight is fine it also has 2" x 2" fiberglass blocking in between it and the hull. Is this blocking sufficient? Do I need to add a 1" x 2" on the inside of the hull? There is a 1" flat washer and a nylock nut on all 4 connection points inside the hull transom. Jeff

Lighter is better

For handling and your back. I would not buy an OB that was less than 25" shaft. When the water gets rough, and you need the OB to get traction, anything less will not serve you well.
