Outboard vs Inboard

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there would be a huge differance between the 9hp inboard & a 9.9 honda outboard when motoring an H260 in 5-6 ft seas. I was on a friends boat,a 23ft o'day with a 9.9 outboard (xl shaft)While motoring in 6ft waves on lake ontario I noticed (& heard)that the prop kept coming out of the water each time we crested a wave. Liked the ride but hated the high pitched whine. Could I expect more of the same with an outboard on the H260 or was that experience due to a poor set up on my friends boat. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Happy Holidays

I have owned a hunter 25 with an outboard--I have owned an Irwin 30 with an inboard. If you want to get the prop out of the water on an inboard you have to lift the boat out of the water. Its been my experence that outboards smell better-good sailing.

I had a Starwind 22 w/9.9 Merc (great) till the first one got stolen then during the start of the first BOC Around Alone out of Charleston the second one swallowed a mouthfull of good ole Alantic. Over-run by 500+ boats at the starting line, cause I can't start the engine and ended up in the way, $250.00 in service fees to get it running again. I did have a great sail back to the slip. I now have a H33 w/inboard for these reasons. If you want a readily trailerable boat and sail in calm water outboards are cheap, easy to replace and more, but a major pain to start, guide, turn etc. If you want to enjoy sailing in the big pond and change some of the worries then go inboard. Two different worlds. Porter Claytor s/v Cynara
