Here is my problem. I have a 2000 rope start 8 hp Honda. My wife wants a electric start so she can start the engine by herself. Do I sell The motor outright and look for a new or used motor or trade it in for a new motor. I am looking for the least expensive way out.

Buy it...

but have her kick in a signifiacnt amount out of her mad money. Then sell the old one and use the proceeds to fund other upgrades. Don't overlook the need (and $$) to run wires out to the motor.

Can You Add A Starter to the Motor?

Or how about a stronger girlfriend?

Which would you rather..

Which would you rather keep? The wife or the engine? The stronger girlfriend has a certain appeal, doesn't it? Else, sell the pull start outright, it will be worth more that way.

technique ...

When we were cruising, Maggie weighed about 105 Lbs - and pull-started our old 6 HP Johnson. It’s more a matter of technique than brute strength. Show her how to get a short sharp pull - maybe she’ll surprise you. If she cannot (or won’t) get the hang of it; ask the dealer for a trade-in quote, then try to sell privately for more.

keeping the Admiral happy...

she might be worried about being able to start the motor if you go overboard. Be happy she will sail with you and upgrade the motor. I think there is an larger alternator upgrade on the electric start. Check with the dealer first, but I would sell it outright. Those are popular motors and the 8hp should sell fast.

Outboard

Does your wife know how little value you place on her company while you sail that your main concern is not her comfort, but trying to make the best deal? Be a hero to her. Go out and buy her the engine she wants. Take her along and let her pick it out herself. She'll be thrilled. Sell the old one for what ever it brings. What's the difference? A few hundred bucks? There are thousands of sailors who would pay a hell of a lot more than that to get their wives to sail with them. You've got a bargain here and you don't know it. Don't screw it up.

Harsh Response

===== your main concern is not her comfort, but trying to make the best deal? ===== Don't you think that's a little harsh? Not only that, on the surface, it appears to be incorrect. From the way he worded his "problem", it sounds as if he's already made the decision to get the motor she wants. So, his PRIMARY concern was getting her the motor, getting the best deal was a secondary concern.

Herb's right, Augie...

HIs question is whether to sell or trade-in the old motor, not choose between wife or outboard. I say, find the replacement motor first, then sell the old one.

Just sold mine

I just sold my 1999 Honda 8hp rope start for $1,000. It was an XL shaft. Many fishing boats use these Honda 8hp motors for trolling so there is a good market for them.
