i'm looking at a 4 stroke mercury 9.9 for my 1965 26' pearson. should i be concerned about the weight (84lbs)? since i'm buying new, does anyone have a better suggestion for a reliable outboard?

Shop around

Not real sure but don't think the weight should be a problem. Do shop around though. That engine is either a Yamaha or a Suzuki. One of them makes the Mercs. and the other makes the OMC's. You might also consider one of the Nissan/Tohatsu motors. They have a very good reputation, and are probably less bucks.

thanks

thanks, that's helpful. i think i may have just found a 1996 9.8 tohatsu online (we'll see for real when i call in the morning) for much cheaper. that would be great. it's a 25", which i think would be better.

A friend of mine

has a 1966 Ariel and just replacded is big old and heavy 2-stroker with a new 4-stroke, 6 hp Tohatsu, that he bought online. I thought this may not be a powerful enough engine for this boat, but so far he reports it pushes the boat well and is light enough to take out of the well and hang on the push pit.
