I have an Oday 25. I want to purchase a new outboard. I usually sail on a local lake so current is not an issue. However I will be trailering my boat out to california to sail to catalina and other islands. I know that the boat is rated at 15 horse max power. But I now have an OLD unreliable 9.9 HP 2 stroke so I need something that I can reli on. This engine will push me at 6 knots when it runs. I need to balance the price with weight. But I Can't determine how fast a 6hp or 8hp will push my boat. Does anyone have any experience with either of these horse power rated motors? How much does your boat displace and how fast do you cruse at what trottle position. I'm shootin in the dark here.

I doubt you need a 15 hp outboard on that sized boat. Since about all you can buy now a days is a 4 stroke, I would buy a long shaft 4 stroke of your choice. If weight is a concern, I think Nissan has the lightest 4 strokes out there. The 4 stroke engine will be much more efficient than your old 2 cycle, it will be quieter and more fuel efficient. You will want to sail when you can anyway and usually boats sail faster than they can motor. Unless the wind shuts down, you will want to sail. I recommend about a 10 HP outboard.

Six HP is Plenty

I'd probably go with an eight HP motor in order to get a twin vs a single cylinder engine. You do not need more than eight HP.

Dave, 6 HP should be plenty but like Rick stated 8 HP will give you a twin which will be smoother. I have a 27' Hunter that displaces 7000 LBs (probably closer to 8K with all the stuff in it) and run an old Honda 8 hp four stroke. In calm water I can motor at 5.7 knots at approximately 3/4 throttle. If I wasn't dragging the big three bladed prop for the "emergency" diesel inboard, I bet I could motor over 6 knots. One thing I changed on the outboard was the prop, I went to a lower pitch.
A friend bought a 6 HP four stroke for his Columbia 23t (sorry I don't know the displacement) and it powers that with authority.
Whatever manufacturer you go with make sure you get a long, or better yet, an extra long shaft and the correct prop for sailboats.

Don't be concerned only with how fast you can go. In strong headwinds or currents, the bigger prop blades will be of great benefit. I bought a used B235 that came with a Suzuki 6 with a prop like a mixmaster beater. After the first season I sold it. Honda had just come out with the extra-long (25") shaft, and that's what I bought. No regrets. I think the boat was 3200 pounds.

I sail a 1979 Oday 25 and have a 2006 4-stroke Mercury 9.9. I would not have anything less. There have been many times where I am motoring against wind and current and can barely make headway. I realize that you will be sailing in lakes predominately, and tide and current is not an issue for you. But wind will be.

The previous owner had a 7.5 old school Honda 4-stroke on it. It worked great up until the day it died.

Dollar for dollar and pound for pound, I would get the 9.9. Keep in mind also that 15 hp rating is based on the old 2 stroke technology.

Whatever you buy don't settle for a stock propeller but get one designed for sailboats. It should not cost more.
They don't make you go faster but they push better at no extra fuel consumption.
They are also efficient in reverse, a feature very usefull when docking or maneuvering in tight spaces.

Yamaha makes a hi torque 9.9 that would work nice. I have the 8hp on my P23. My dock neighbor has a Oday 25 with a 9.9 2cycle, and he always comments how he wishes his shift lever was on the tiller like my Yamaha. It is convenient. I also get comments all the time about how quiet my OB is compared to others. It has been very reliable.

Tiller Shifters may be Another Cosideration

My Mercury has a "Grip Shift" the shifter is built into the throttle. I would not get a outboard without it.
