Outboard stern rail motor mount

I have an old Johnson 9.9 outboard motor that I would like to mount on my stern rail. I made a mount out of 2 x 8 pressure treated wood, but when I mounted it, it stressed the rail too badly. What do you guys use? Or is my motor simply too heavy?

Get a pre made mount from any of the parts distributors like Defender, Catalina direct or Jamestown.

Just check the weight restrictions.

Thanks for the reply bobcat, but I was hoping to avoid a costly purchase and was wondering what homemade options were out there.

These are very inexpensive. They mount onto the rail with four bolts. I did
this in 2006. removed the wooden one. Looks better and you never have to varnish it.

My old C27 came with a 9.9 Johnson, pretty heavy motor to be on the stern pulpit. Not a fun prospect lifting it on and off the ding. Defender had plastic outboard rail brackets on clearance a few months ago. I got one, besides being brown it works for my 2hp Honda, worth a look.

The ones I've seen from Defender and such are ~ $300.00. Not exactly cheap by my standards. I would guess my Johnson to be in the neighborhood of 100 lbs. Any homegrown. solutions?

You must be referring to a transom mount rather than rail mount. If you are a craftsman you can make one out of stainless like the ones Defender sells. Chief

I made one very much like the one shown out of synthetic decking. See port side of stern rail.

I have a 6 hp Merc. 4 stroke, 68 lbs hanging off my pushpit rail along with davits held off the transom but attached to the rail, a 100 lb dinghy with 50 lbs of fuel in it, 50 + lbs of solar panel et/al and all supported by the same pushpit. To brace it I added two cheap Pulpit Anchors (West Marine part # 114785 - $12.99 ea) attached to the outboard vertical bars of the pushpit, high up near the top horizontal rail and ran cables attached on one end to a cheap turnbuckle and the other to a thimble stretched down on an angle to padeyes through-bolted along the top of the coaming, then just tightened the turnbuckles until they had the pushpit held rigid. Voila. Then you can hang virtually any heavy item off your rail.
I'd throw away that old Johnson though and get a lighter 2 stroke outboard, save your back along with your railing.

A week tomorrow we haul out for the winter and the pics will be far clearer without the Bimini enclosure, dinghy and outboard all in the way. As I type I am out for a last of the season 2 night trip, wing on wing right now drifting along on a perfect fall afternoon. Just 3 knots but who cares?
