The stern rails in Hunter are parallel but uneven. The upper lies 3" more aft than the lower. Furthermore, there is no straigh T section to attach the engine mount. I've seeing in the archives where people spent +$1000 in welding to place a motor mount. Today, I found an inexpensive alternative. Using the motor mount from Westmarine I attached an 10" section of 3/4" pvc to the T section. At the bottom end I used an elbow, followed by a 3" section, followed by a end stop/plug. Just picture an L under the engine mount with the end of the PVC facing forward and hitting the lower rail. This prevents the motor mount from piviting forward. To prevent the engine from flying aft and away I used a bungee cord oround the engine shaft. Cost $11 plus mount, less than 1 hr labor. Worked great today. If you have a heavier motor you may consider using 1" pvc or placing alluminum inside the pvc. For a 3 hp engine, I had no problems. Hopes this helps with all you new Hunter owners. abe comments appreciated, sorry don't have digital camera for pictures

abe,

how dare you post here without a digital camera! :) Seriously, another way around it is to find the item you are referring to on line and post the link. Of course, a piece of pvc is easier to just describe. I'm still looking for a heavy engine mount.

not for heavy engines

I rigged a similar setup on my 410. Worked fine with my 3.5 hp two stroke, but when I switched to an 8hp four stroke it shattered in heavy seas. Would have lost the engine overboard were it not for the safety line. After that I switched to the outrageously expensive Edson model, which is much more rugged than the West Marine.

Is it stable?

We have a 4hp motor that weighs about 60 pounds and is secured to a very sturdy mount. I've posted a picture here in the past. I've watched it when the boat is under a load and can imagine it exerts a lot of force on the rail. I can't visualize how PVC would be strong enough to support this. Would love to see a picture of your setup. John Richard s/v Jack's Place
