I now have a 1988 Mercury 9.9, 2 cycle outboard on my 1988 O'day 25. I would like to upgrade. What are my options? I do like the Mercury brand, like the 9.9 pro kicker, but concerned about the extra weight. My motor bracket will hold a 20 HP. Thank you, Day sailor.

I've got a new Merc 9.9 and am pleased with it. I bought it without the electric start to save on weight when I had to lift it up out of the water while sailing. You won't need the Pro-kicker for the extra torque. Mine handles the boat just fine.
All the OB brands are pretty close in weight/HP.

Why are you upgrading? Does the old motor work, just look bad?
Check the archives about reinforcing the transom. The four stroke weight more per horse power, about 30 pounds more on the 9.9.
Also, new four stroke motors are wider so most likely you will also have to replace bracket.
Consider Tahatsu, they have shown reliability and in fact may make the 9.9 for Mercury.

Agree on the Tohatsu. Mercury outboards under 40 hp are made by Tohatsu. Paint the Tohatsu black and only your wallet will know it isn't a Mercury.

RBone, How are they different? I bought a 6 hp Tohatsu and also looked at the Mercury and I could not see a difference.
That was a couple of years ago and the ones I saw were very different. Now that's not the case.

One thing to consider is parts and servicing. There aren't any Tohatsu dealers around here but lots of Mercs. I needed some warranty work last year on my Merc 9.9.

One of my friends just bought a new Tohatsu 9.9 with the extra long shaft for his Seaward 22. He owns a smaller Tohatsu outboard that he uses on his small launch and he likes these engines. The 9.9 has the electric start and the charging system. If your Mercury 9.9 is still running good I would keep using it. I have a 1999 8 HP Johnson two stroke long shaft with the charging system and I love this engine.

I'm also still using a 1990 Mercury 2 stroke on a Oday 25 and it does the job very well although it uses 25% more fuel (think range) than a new 4 stroke. Another point not usually considered is that it is easier to hand start a 2 stroke since more than one cylinder may fire on a single hand pull. I've found the best deal in the country for new outboards is Portabote on the west coast. We've purchase 2 engines from them over the years and they beat all comers on price, including Defender. They once sent me a 3.5 via Fed Ex across the country and still beat Defender by $100.

In Annapolis I have a local Tohatsu dealer but if that's not the case where you are then the Tohatsu won't seem a such a good deal if getting it serviced is a problem.
Daysailer, What ever you buy, check for the best price on the internet and then ask the local dealer to meet it. It worked for me.
