Hi O'Dayers. I'm hoping to join your club soon. I'm looking at a 20' O'Day. It's a really nice boat but has no motor. I'm still learning how to sail, so I'll probably be using the motor quite a bit to put around, definately need one to get in and out of the marina. I'm wondering what size is optimal for this boat? I'll probably spend a few bucks and get a decent one. I've found a good deal on a 3.5 horse 4 stroke suzuki (2006). Is this enough power? I like the size for sure, but I do want to be able to reach hull speed (whatever that is). thanks for any input. i want to buy this boat right away, but am trying to remain calm and find out as much info as possible. Any other comments on this model would be appreciated as well. see you out there, jason

Hey Jason, I think you may want a bit more Hp than 3.5. I owned a 22ft O'Day and used a 7.5 motor which seemed about right. You may need your motor to get you safely back to the marina some day. I would go for something a little bigger. I'm no expert, but I'm sure several will chime in. Best of luck with your new O'Day. Joe

Jason, I've got another O'Day site that you can check out that has a lot of info on the O'Day 20,and it's called "I love O'Days.com." I've been using a Johnson 8 hp 2 stroke engine on my O'Day 222, and I love this engine for it's dependability and power. Also, the controls are right in front on this engine, and it has an alternator that charges my house battery. For an O'Day 20 though, I would recommend an engine of about 6 hp. Joe

i bought my oday 20 last fall but haven't had it in the water or sailed it yet. i am in the process of getting it ready. mine came with a 5 hp honda. i figured it was worth half as much as the boat.

Raven........... Since you live in Vancouver...... we know you are not a lake sailor. I would go with a very minimum 6 HP and preferably an 8 HP since you are dealing with (sometimes)strong currents and winds in the Pacific. i quess it should have added my oday 20 with 5 hp honda is located on one of the finger lakes. the previous owner had the boat docked in sodus bay and sailed the bay and lake ontario. if i remember correctly, he said it was adequate but could have used alittle more power. i would think the shaft length may also be almost as important as the hp. if the prop is out of the water it doesn't matter how much hp you have.
