Outboard size

I have to replace the outboard on my Oday 22 , as someone stole my Merc 7.5hp.I only use my outboard 4-8hrs per year and was wondering if I can get away with a smaller outboard ??? or will I regret it .

Six is plenty

I have a long-shaft, 4-stroke 6hp on my O'22 and can reach hull speed at a little more than 1/2 throttle.

6 HP

I have a 6 HP Evinrude on my "22"...Works great. Suggest you stick with a 2 Stroke as the weight is alot less. As info, I used a Johnson 3 HP for many years...worked fine. If your in strong tidal waters, go with the 6 HP.Good Luck!

Nissan Outboard

I just purchased a 4 stroke 6hp Nissan this season and I love it. I filled the gas tank up in April and I still have about 1/2 gallon left in it. (3.5 gallon tank) It is quiet, starts on 1 or 2 pulls, is lighter than my old Johnson 6hp 2 stroke ( it's about 58 lbs) and it was less expensive than some of the other brand outboards. It also gets me to hull speed at no more than 3/4 throttle.

4hp should be sufficient

Hi J.D. As others have mentioned, you should be fine with a smaller motor. Bigger means more money and more weight without necessarily more speed. You may get more torque, but you're not going to get over hull speed with more hp. Bottom line, get a less expensive motor and you'll be happy!Best,Trevor
