I just provided a similar answer here regarding the Lancer 25. The weight of the two boats is probably similar, but the approx. 3500 lb L25 has a very flat bottom with a very wide fixed stub keel. The 6 hp might be okay for a lake or protected waters if it is a long shaft...as long is it isn't one of the Great Lakes, which is more likely given your location in Buffalo. If you have one, give it a try, but on Lake Erie I think you will be safer and happier with more HP (8-10).

IMHP if you are able to buy a high thrust prop it WILL push the boat through anything you can keep the prop underwater in

Six horse motors are common on the C25s on our small lake. But I agree with Bob about Lake Erie where I sailed for eight years, you should opt for the ten. And the right prop.

I had a Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust on my Catalina 22. Way too much motor for the boat but I had a 45 min ride in the river channel to my sailing waters. I needed the high thrust to counter wind, current, and barge wakes.
When I changed marinas and just needed to clear the marina to sail, I changed to a 6 hp.

I used a 6hp Nissan (4 stroke) on a C&C 25 Redline for a couple of years on Lake Ontario. It would cruise at about 4.5 knots. It didn't seem to make a lot of difference whether I was going into the wind or not. 4.5 knots.
Used an 8 hp Mariner 2 stroke on my 4.5 draft Southern Cross 23. Hardly ever used the full power, but it was nice to know the reserve would be there if needed, against wind and chop. Important is the position of the motor, ie. that it is deep enough and still bites when seas are choppy. BTW it still ran as new after well over 10 years, without even salting up and only home maintenance.
Exactly.. like others have said, ya need a long shaft to keep it in the water and a prop that gives it some grunt and it will be fine. Most motors of that size come with a prop that is fine for pushing a small flat bottomed boat at high speed.. you'll need a lower pitch for pushing the 25..
Sailer or not??? If you tend to drop the sails and motor when the wind comes up the 6 might not work. But if you tend to reef the sails and keep on sailing then it might work. I had a 4 hp on a Mac 26 and it worked fine. A Honda 7.5 worked better but the extra HP was rarely used.
