My motor guy suggested I only run Chevron premium in mine, which I have done without a problem. He also said to pour the gas into the car after 3-4 weeks, which I do also. So far, no problems...even after motor came off the mount and took a dive into ocean. (I got to learn the PO used contact cement to glue on the mounts anti-slip. Don't ever do that!)

Can you guys get non-ethanol at marinas? I was able to find it about any place in Florida. Sure it might be more than the gas at the gas station, but for how much you use compared to a car I'd go that route if I could. I worried about it going down last fall, so filled the 19 gallon tank in the laz here at home where we don't have ethanol yet.

Then I get there and find out I didn't have to do that. The new outboards have even smaller jets, but at least the gasket material and such is or should be made to deal with the ethanol. Not sure I can say the same for the older outboards we also own.

On the 10 HP. It looks to be about the same weight as our 8 HP Honda which we liked until we bought the 9.8 Tohatsu. If the outboard is in good shape I'd consider it. Have them run it in a tank or something.

I think $800 is high and $400 is low, so if you get it for that I think it would be a good deal. The ones I've seen are going for about $600. We will probably sell ours and try and get $500 or so, but we are a long ways from everyone. If we have room maybe we will take it to Florida after the first of the year and put it on craigslist list down there,

Hey sum--I know you mentioned toget the longest shaft you can. I can get a good deal on a 2009 long shaft Tohatsu 9.8. will be putting it on the 26s for sailing in the chesapeake. Do you think it will be long enough?

Probably tons of boats there with the long shaft. We got the extra long shaft so that we could mount it higher and still have it in the water as deep as a long shaft. In about 3 months in Florida set like that I think it came out of the water only 2-3 times total.

From what I've seen of conditions in say San Francisco Bay if I lived there I would want an extra long shaft and have it mounted all the way down. Don't know what your conditions are there compared to San Fran Bay.

If I was buying from scratch and new I'd spend the extra couple hundred for the extra long shaft unless I was in a lot of shallow water, but if a good used long shaft came along like what seems to be your situation I'd buy the used long shaft.

You'll like that outboard if it has been cared for. I think I would put an impeller in it and change the oil and the lower-end lube unless you know that has been done for sure recently. Might want to add that into the cost and see where you come out.

Good luck,

I would assume the Chesapeake is like Biscayne bay (Miami), shallow and short chop when windblown. (I THINK SF bay has longer wave periods, since its much deeper)

I've had problems going into and out of the cuts to marinas, when its blowing over 20knts and 3'+

-when every wave the ob lifts out of the water for a second or 2... rasing the main has helped... but harder to control in the channel.

its a baddd feeling... having the waves push you around in restricted channels and rocks on the sides. I've been lucky.

its your decision..

boats us unlimited tow might be an investment to consider... too.
