I have recently bought a 26ft 1990 MacGregor boat. I have a new outboard and was wondering if, it being a Honda 9.9hp long shaft (20") will work on boat. The Evinrude (1990) that was on there was a 20 inch shaft as well but when compared to the honda the Evinrude is longer by 5 inches. I guess my question is will the Honda being shorter work with out any modifications?

I have a 20" shaft Tohatsu and for the most part it's plenty long enough. You need to be careful if you're going to be on port tack with the boat heeled in enough breeze to create some waves. Then the propeller may cavitate but it hasn't done it enough to damage the motor. Besides, if there's enough wind to heel the boat, you should be sailing anyway. The propeller also cavitates when some yahoo in a large powerboat goes by without slowing.

Might check to make sure both are long shaft. If both are 20 inch (standard long shaft), I dont think one outboard should be longer than the other by 5 inches. Make sure its not actually a short shaft.

FYI, a short shaft outboard will NOT work. A long shaft works "fine" (see Robspans description) and some people prefer an extra long shaft so that even in big waves, the prop stays in the water.

I have problems w/ cavitation, in a short chop situation. my opinion, is it greatly depends on where you sail.

inland lakes and rivers, you'll proably be just fine.

But if you try to enter/exit an offshore cut w/ current or wind driven waves, you may find yourself unable to make headway with just a motor. As it lifts out of the water, rpm speeds up, and wants to burn up the impeller, and your motor. not to mention loosing momentum and steerage...

since you own this motor, I'd try it, but be careful on where you sail til you know...

Hi guys,

me again, still doing mods, this is a problem for me, i have a johnsen on my 25 and have no thrust in reverse, i think its not down far enough and my bracket is in need of repair so have picked up a new one and will replace and make lower, is there a minimum distance the prop should be underwater

The anti-cavitation plate above the prop should be submerged but that is going to change with chop
