I have some questions about outboards: My '94 Mariner 9.9 two-stroke, elec. start, is giving me fits. It is fairly slow to start but sounds good when started. Yesterday it vibrated more than usual, and was sluggish on the throttle. I could only feel oily exhaust coming out of the tell-tale hole directly behind the bottom of the motor. (In the past water has come out.) We only went 50 yards and returned to dock because I don't trust the motor. It did not stall, but I was concerned about the lack of water coming out of the hole and how it was running. If I replace the unit, what's the best brand

best motor for hunter 28

hey neil i sail a 2000 hunter 260. my power plant comes from a suszuki 9.9 4 stroke. it has an alternator to keep my battery charged, and can push my 260 at 4knots. it has electric start, and if needed can be cranked by hand on the first pull. with the white hull the black suszuki looks good too... good luck , fair winds and happy sailing!!!!! dan

8 horse

I have an 8 hp Suzuki 2 stroke w/automatic oil injection. It's run at 5 knots all day without straining. The 2 strokes are a bit lighter and mechanically simpler than the 4 strokes, but the 4's are less polluting, have better gas mileage and don't have the bother of adding oil to the gas.

Overhaul or tune-up

If it was adequate in the past, why not have it re-furbished? I get 'sticker shock' at the price of new OBMs, the 4 strokes in particular. I burn less than 5 gallons of fuel per year so it wouldn't make much sense to upgrade but if you motor a lot or have tides and/or currents to fight, it might be worth upgrading. Ken S/V WouffHong

Your water pump impeller may be shot

If you are not getting a steady stream of water out of the port under the engine cover when the engine starts, the impeller on the pump is probably bad. The engine should be shut down immediately. The rubber vanes sometimes stick to the walls of the pump chamber, especially if you don't use the motor much and keep it out of the water. When you try to start the engine, the vanes rip right off the hub. If you're lucky the pieces stay in the pump, but they are known to travel through the engine and block water channels in the head. This is bad news. Even worse, the pump is not putting out as much cooling water as it should, so the chance of overheating increases. This can quickly lead to things like blown head gaskets and warped cylinder linings. Get your engine checked ASAP. It's also not a bad idea to keep a spare impeller on board especially if you motor a lot. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Honda 8

I've had 3 motors on my 23,5. A 1995 Johnson 9.9 4 stroke (smooth, quiet, efficient, heavy and terribly unreliable). While I was waiting for parts for the Johnson, which never arrived, I used a 5 horse Evinrude 2 stroke (noisy, smelly, reliable, lightweight and not enough power.) Presently I am using a 9.9 Honda 4 stroke. At the time I purchase the Honda the 9.9 was the smallest one you could get with extra long shaft, electric start and alternator. So far, this motor is great...incredibly smooth, quiet, powerful and efficient. Only problem is it is a bit heavy at 119 pounds. Honda has recently introduced an 8hp model that is available with the x long shaft, electric start and alternator. It weighs considerably less than the 9.9. Seems to me the 8 would be the ideal motor for a 23.5/240. Hope this helps

Outboards!

I have a new H260 with a 9.9 Honda. As far as I'm concerned that motor's the most important piece of safety equipment I have on board and it's already proven it's self several times. It gets great mileage and it pushes the 260 with ease. I'd recommend it to anyone.

My Vote 8Hp Honda

I have had and used a Honda 8Hp for four seasons now and no problems. The 9.9 Hp is probably overkill for a H240. The 8hp pushes my 240 at 5-6knts with ease and doesn't weigh as much as the 9.9

Another vote for Honda

I've got a 1981 Honda 7.5hp on my 1981 H-22 and find it to be an excellent unit. The motor starts easily, burns less than 2/3 the fuel a 2 stroke does and has a lovely slow idle, very nice for manuvering in tight quarters. The alternator output keeps up the boat's battery too.
