I replaced my 15 year old Nissan 5hp (lower-unit went out) about a year ago with a new Nissan 5hp. Worked fine last season, but this year the reverse lock-down is not working reliably. Just when you need a little "reverse prop" action coming into the slip, it'll tilt up when given a little gas. I've tried adjusting the tilt pin, lubed everything, but still does it. Help! I replaced the gears and bearings in my 15 year old one this winter, and I'm about to put it back on! Thanks for any help. Ernie Rogers '86 h23 Whimsy II

Ernie, There has to be some type of permenate
locking devise that totally locks the motor in the straight down position. It sounds like you need a deeper picture or better help to locate this devise. Once there you can re-adjust it. To do this you should buy a factory engine manual for that year and model motor. The one for my 10 hp Honda cost about $20. With the book there is not a repair on that motor that a person with a little common sense can't do. That's probably the best way to go. Then any other nagging items on the motor can be repaired. I was having the same problem you describe, so last time I had my Nissan 8 hp 2-cycle serviced, I asked the repairman about it. He gave me the following tip: when you tilt the motor down into operating position, the shifter should be in forward, not neutral. Otherwise, the reverse lock won't engage properly. I tried this on my engine, and he's right. Don't forget to shift back to neutral once the motor is down.

Adjust the rods
I had this same problem about a month ago. Above the water line on the outboard there is a rubber plug, remove that plug there will be 2 rods. One rod is for the reverse link and the other one is for the pin that keeps the motor from locking down when your a in forward. Loosen the screw alittle bit and move the rod alittle bit. Just move it a little bit and try. If it doesn't lock in try alittle bit more. It worked for me. Happy sailing!! Jason "Slapshot"

same problem--another suggestion
I had the same problem with my 5 hp Nissan this weekend. The motor would pop up when put in reverse. I found a pin that latches it down had come loose on one side of the motor bracket. This long pin has a spring on the starboard side and a swinging latch pin that locks it in on the port side of the motor bracket. The latch pin has come loose twice on my boat, but its a quick and easy fix. I may drill a hole in the end of the pin and put a cotter ring in it so that it can't work its way out again. nissan 5 hp motor
after our 89 5 h p nissan was stolen we got a new one, it has always been sort of a problem to get in to reverse, I had it checked by a tech and he said nothing wrong just shifts hard, anyone else notice this , now , on the putting engine in gear before u put it down , do u put it in gear when it is not running ? or start it out of the water, sure is an interesting concept, thanks for the help Mike Bacome

Mike, You put it in forward gear before you start the engine, tilt the motor into position, then return to neutral to start. This allows the reverse lock to engage properly. BTW I had a problem engaging reverse recently; hard to shift, and it would bounce out of gear while running. The cause was water in the lower unit due to a leaking seal on the prop shaft. New seal and grease, works fine now.
