Looking for advice on mounting OMC outboard controls in the cockpit- location, type (are there special ones designed for sailboats), etc. Thanks.

Remote outboard controls

Steve: I have a 79 Oday 25 with a spring loaded outboard bracket on the starboard side of the transom. The boat came with a 9.8 horsepower Mercury with remote controls. The dual control( 1 lever for throttle and 1 for gearshift) is mounted on the starboard side of the cockpit even with the after end of the starboard cokpit locker. This has made it really easy to change a cable, since I can get at the control unit mounting bolts through the locker. It also allows for a short cable run (6 to 7 feet). I have never had a boat with remote control before and I love it. The 25 has high enough freeboard that manual shifting requires some work. It's great to be able to look forward while shifting or adjusting throttle speed.

Tiller mounted controls

I have a friend who restores sailboats. Recently, he installed a control unit on the tiller that has all the shift, throttle, and kill controls. Pretty slick outfit. If you're still following this thread, and are interested, email me at rkmarcks@operamail.com and I will try to find out where he got this unit. Russ Marcks

Depends on model, but...

Greetings, Did you contact the manufacturer? Many of the smaller outboards, depending on their age, have add on options of a remote control. If you are running something like a ten or a fifteen, you might be able to order the etire setup. Most of them are just bolt on affairs, because most of these engines are used on lil aluminum 12 footers and the like. Josh
