Does anyone know what kind of paint (primer and finish) that is best to use for a small outboard engine ? Tremclad rust paint layers off in water, and the cavitation I would suspect would remove most normal paints. Any ideas/experience ?

Dealer?

In another life when I raced outboard hydros we bought cans of spray paint from the Mercury dealer. We used this to keep the lower units shiny and smooth. That was in the 50's so the paint should be much improved by now. :)

Try West Marine

I did the same thing a couple of years ago. I got aluminum primer and "color matched" paint for my Johnson (they've got colors for all brands). Other then the color match being not-quite-on it's held up really well. Jim "Prospect"

Second for using the matched paint

I used the paint West Marine carries to touch up my merc 3.3 where it had gotten scraped from being dragged ashore. Matched and has held up well. Justin - O'day Owners' Web
