Outboard pulley assist

My 9.9 Johnson is on and adjustible bracket that is too heavy for me to raise and lower. I think the springs are shot. I want to develop a pulley system to assist me. I have seen one or two examples on line but wondered if any of you have done such a thing and if you do do you have a pic?

If the springs are shot best solution would be to replace the motor bracket with a new adjustable one. Pulley lifts that attach to the transom and transom pulpit are commercially available. I had one to lift a 56 lbs outboard engine and found it kind of clumsy. It puts a strain on the pulpit and works best when the angle of pull is straight down. I really do not know how one would work with a heavier engine with perhaps a not straight angle of pull as the engine would not be free but attached to a motor mount. Check and see if the angle of pull is the same as the motor mount needs to slide. Like I said I would recommend a motor mount replacement.

Doug, I have a unit, new in box, that I bought for my 15ftr... Which now has a new owner.
It looks something like this only white and stainless. Send me a PM if interested.

I have an outboard crane for loading the outboard on the dinghy. It works pretty well. I use it more often for hoisting scuba gear on-board after a dive. Previous owner installed it. I just checked and it is $499.99 at West Marin. I think you could get a new motor mount for less than half of that amount.

Les Troyer Posted the following idea:
Not a davit per-say - but I've purchased http://swing-lift.com/ for lifting my OB onto the back of my Cat36 - I like the way the motor doesn't swing around

Les
It looks like an interesting option for a lifting system. Les swears by it.

I don't know if this helps, but PDQ catamarans are powered by 9.9 hp outboards lifted by a 2:1 tackle. The leverage points are different, but it sure works. A good handle at the end (a loop with tubing) helps.

The only real glitch is that if you are careless about the slack you can get it in the prop. In this case, a fitting broke, requiring me to go for a swim in cool water. Dry suits rule.

Pateco, I had one of those, it worked great for lifting a bag of supplies from the dinghy to the cockpit sole. It even helped transferring a heavy generator from the dock to the boat. It definitely had more uses than to raise and lower an outboard engine which at the time did justify the price of $200. If the issue is only to lower and raise the engine a replacement motor mount is the way to go.

One of the best frustration removers I've made for our M25 was the lift system.

If you gotta get a new motor mount, the Garhauer units sold by Catalinadirect.com are superior to the average Garelick unit you can find just about everywhere else.
