Outboard problem/solution?

Hello all:

My boat has a reverse transom and a Honda 9.9 which weighs about 100 lbs. I have to put one foot on the motor mount, reach down and flip the release, then grab the motor and lift it out of the water, then I am ready to sail.

I'm sure many others have this problem, one slip and you are off the boat and into the water, a big problem if you single-hand as I do.

I'm looking for a solution which will allow me to do the tipping and raising the motor from the cockpit without risking life and limb.

So far I have tried using a boat hook, works but takes a lot of effort and probably puts too much stress on the motor hand-hold.

How do the rest of you do it? I can't be the only one that has to stand on the motor mount to raise the motor.

Gar lik has an OB motor tilter and an OB motor lift that lifts, very heavy outboards clear of the water. To use the tilter with your setup and without hanging over to release the reverse lock catch, you would have to set up your shallow water release which when you do, allows your motor to kick up in reverse.

I had the same issue until my hand-held GPS solved the problem.

Sailing along at 4.8kts., with the motor up, I lowered the motor and put it in reverse. The speed dropped .2 knots. Now I only raise the motor if I'm sailing to a distant destination or racing. Point-two knots just isn't worth the trouble for a 3-hour cruise.

I had a "hoisting issue" with a 75 lb Mercury on my ODay 23. I rigged a block and tackle off the stern rail, and spliced a loop around the engine clamp handles. Now I just release the bracket, and haul up on the line ..easy..!...and it also serves as a safety line to hold the engine. (I did the same thing on an ODay 22 with reverse sheer transom).
