it's time to buy a new outboard for my o'day 22. connanacutt marina says their honda 5hp is what i want. the evinrude 6 that i am replaceing was fine until a coil failed, but is the 5hp too small? i sail mostly in semi-protected narragansett bay in RI. thanks bob thanks too for the previous help i've recieved from this group.

how much does the 5hp honda cost?? 5hp is probably good enough as long as you don't have to fight any tides or a strong current. (ie. going to and from a slip/mooring to sail and back) Honda's are very good motors but they are expensive. Obviously, if you are looking for motor where if there are any problems you can take it to them that's fine. Are they a Honda marine dealer?? Have you checked the price at other dealers and on the web?? I bought a nissan 6hp 4 stroke at www.marine-outboards.com 2 seasons ago and it was PERFECT for my 22 and at an incredible price. you might want to take a look at their prices before you buy. They were hundreds less than any other dealer. If you were able to get a 6hp for the price of a 5hp you might be better off (or at least a bit more worry-free about pushing your boat) They also make nissan 5hp's which again are considerably less expensive than the Honda's.

thanks for your thoughts. the cost of the (new) honda ex. long shaft 5hp is $1366.00 tax + prep included. that is less than any other honda dealer i've been able to find, less than west marine's mercury, and a better deal than cabelas' nissan. too bad that honda doesn't make a 6hp. in the bay here there aren't normally any areas of current over 3knts. I bought a new outboard for my Oday 23 last year from Sailnet. Nissan 8 hp two stroke long shaft electric start. $1500, no tax, no shipping, included new tank, fuel hose and small tool kit. And the kids loved the big box it came in. Be careful about the four stroke; don't buy one unless you are sure your motor mount is specifically rated to take a four stroke. Its not just the added weight of the four v. two stroke that can strain the mount; fours generate more low end torque. that's why the newer mounts are specifically designed and rated to carry not just the extra weight. If you want the four stroke (and there are a lot of good reasons to want one), make sure to factor in the cost/time to replace the outboard mount as well if necessary.

In a previous post I told of my problems with Honda. I MUST run fresh water in the motor ever time I use it in salt water or it stops up. MIne is a 2000 but only used 2 years.
