I need to replace the outboard motor on 1986 Hunter 25.5. Currently have Johnson Sailmaster with 25" shaft which is shot. Will a Coleman 9.9 hp 20" shaft work on this boat or is that too short? Also, I am open to buying a used motor that will fit this boat (preferably 4 stroke).

When you look at motors hanging off the transom of sailboats, you want to make sure the water pick up and prop are in the water. The concern should be if you are anywhere there is alot of wave action and the boat pitch poles for example bringing the prop out of the water, then you may want to consider the longer or 25 inch shaft.

as for the horse power, the max on most transoms are designed up to but no more than 10 hp. In fact with a 9.9, sometimes it may be too much if the bow starts to raise up at or near full throttle as the boat will slow down as it is for easy lack of terms hitting a wall of water because you are a displacement hull, not a plainning hull.

I have the 1984 25.5 and currently push the boat with a 2004 Evenrude 9.9 using a 25" shaft. My only complaints are the noise and the fuel consumption. I am constantly looking for a 4 stroke unit. They are tough to find used. In the long run it might be a new Tohatsu/Nissan/ Mercury which my understanding are all made by Tohatsu, just branded for each company. The site I like to visit is http://www.onlineoutboards.com/Tohatsu-9-8-hp-Outboards.html
