Hi Hunter owners! First post here... My wife and I just purchased a 1980 Hunter 25'. We have a 9.9 HP Yamaha short shaft (used on previous fishing boat) that we are considering adapting to the sailboat. The motor weighs 106 lbs.. Will the original aluminum mount on the boat hold that much weight without undue stress on the transom? Also, will a short shaft work on this boat? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Richard

A friend of mine used to own an OB powered 1980 Hunter 25. He replaced the cranky old motor with a Honda 9.9 4-stroke with a 25 inch shaft. That motor weighed about 110 lbs as I recall. It was also just about the perfect motor for that boat. But it also necessitated changing the original OB bracket to Garelick heavy duty bracket. I seem to recall that there was one area in the transom that was built up and reinforced where the OB bracket was to be mounted so that moving the original bracket to a lower location would not seem practical. It would also make trying to raise and lower the motor while sailing pretty difficult.

Outboard for h25

Have a 4 stroke Johnson Sailmaster with 25" shaft that weighs 100 odd lbs. Transom on my 81 is quite beefy but re-enforced the heavyweight motor mount with 3/8 by 2" aluminium bars anyway. Overbuilt, but overbuilt stuff doesn't break. Boat trim is just fine. I would not want the short shaft if I had to depend on the motor for anything but slight chop. Your prop will spend as much time spinning in the air as it will pushing the boat. Deeper is better. Also went with a shallow pitched 4 blade working prop, which is in essence a barge pusher. I have a difficult inlet to navagate, and I am delighted by the way the 4 stroke torque bites into the water with this flat prop. Hope this helps, and please place this post in the context of the previous one. Regards, Jim
