I will be removing my old Atomic 4. I plan to replace it with a four stroke outboard as they are quieter, lighter, and more fuel efficient. What size should I install: 6, 8, or 9.9 h.p. I would prefer the 6 as it light and relatively easily removable, but does it have enough power? My sailing is purely close to the coast with some runs out to Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands (12-20 miles away in a fairly calm channel) Any recommendations/suggestions? P.S. I am removing the Atomic 4 and will have it available if someome wants it. It runs fine but stalls every once in a while. I believe this to be due to my carburetor jet becoming dirty and varnished as my boat sometimes sits for 2-3 months. After cleaning it always runs well. Thank You, Dale.

9.9

I had my Cat 27 for 10 years and went through 2 outboard motors. No matter how calm you say the waters are there are always wakes, tides and windy weather that you don't expect. Use the 9.9. with the long shaft. It gives a little more power when you need it.

9.9 definitely

Definitely a 9.9. I have a 27 with a Yamaha 9.9, electric start with controls in the cockpit. You may have to do some adjusting depending on how you mount it, mine swings up into compartment on the stern and just barely fits...Check out all the models to see what will work for your setup.

Sounds like you understand the difference

between 4 and two stroke except for the weight issue. If weight is important 2 stroke is the way to go albeit with penaltys of slight noise incresae, smoke and fuel consumption.

I have 9.9 Mercury Long Shaft

I have a Merc 9.9 Long Shaft 2 cycle that needs some work but would be willing to get it to you for a great price. We put Honda 7,5 on 27 after the 9.9. We lost about a knot which made quite a difference going to Catalina but it did OK. Depending on seas, we pushed 5.0 to 5.6 knts. with Honda.
