I just purchased a Oday 26 Day Sailor. I know very little about boats. It has a 9.9 HP Murcury motor on the back that is no good. I am going to have to get another one. Do I need that much HP? I don't have much money at all, but I'm going to try to find a way to borrow enough to do this so I can at least use my boat. Anything else you can tell me about this, or do I just go to a outdoor shop or boat shop and get one? Thanks very much.

8 HP Long Shaft

Hi Rob, You might get by with 6 HP if your at a mooring or if the OB is a sail version. Sail version uses a large prop with pitch for max speed around 7 knots. Long shaft 20" is a must. Make sure the prop pitch is for around 7 knots or the engine will be overloaded (not reach full rpm at full throttle) Good Luck, Bob _/)

9.9 hp may be about right

The horsepower needed depends upon the displacement (weight) of the boat. On my Grampian 26, which weighs 5000 lbs., 9.9 horsepower is necessary to power the boat at 5 to 6 knots in flat water. You can get by with less, but you may regret it when motoring in bad weather.

Depends on where you are

I have a 3.5 Merc on a 26 foot Columbia. It is more than adequate for getting me in and around the harbor. (I use a 15hp Mariner when I plan any extended trip on the open ocean)

i would use a smaller motor

the smaller the better. on a lake you dont really need to go very fast. A small yahama whould be ligt and easy to stow. and secure and will do a fine job for a lake on that boat 4.5 - 6 h.p when you go to 9,9 your hauling a lot more weight and more fuel consumption and gettig little for it.

You may want to consider...

a used engine. Bob, we purchased a 1990 9.9 hp used motor at a swap meet. It looked in fine condition, and we had it checked out at an outboard mtoor shop. Cost half of a new one. Good luck, Stu

Depends

No not the diaper. It is not uncommon for me to have to push into a 30mph wind to get set upto go home fromit a night anchored out. I need all the power I can get in that situation. So it depends on where you sail and what are the likely conditions, i.e. wind and current. Actually I have a Force 9.9 that I had the head changed on and now I have a 15hp motor for the weight of a 9.9. To get home some times I have to motor to the south shore then sail with SHORTENED sail east with a south wind to get home. Motoring east with a 30+ south wind can push us over and put the motor out of the water. If I motor directly into it I can make it to the south shore then sail home. I do not purposely go out in those conditions but sometimes to get home you hve to. I sail a Hunter 260 in Kansas so that is life here. Corky

outboard for Oday 26

I would go with at least a 9.0 hp. I had an Evinrude 8 on an Oday 23 and needed every bit of of power going into the wind. The boats are pretty light with centerboard, and don't hold their way without sufficient power pushing them.
