We are ready to purchase an outboard motor for a 9ft rigid inflatable. Concerned over ability to plane with 2 people and sometimes 4. Looking at a Honda or Yamaha 8hp versus 9.9hp. Any suggestions?

We have a 5HP Merc on a similar dink...

and am very happy with it. It will plane with one but not two persons aboard. It is the right size for me because I can mount and dismount the motor onto the dink by hand. If it were a larger motor I would have to use mechanical assistance. Having the ability to plane is not one of my requirements. Terry

Nissan/Tohatsu makes the lightest outboards...

I went through this process 6 months ago. 9.8 4 stroke Tohatsu wt 81 lbs and cost $1674 @ onlineoutboards.com. I have an achilles rib hb280 dx 9'2" and works great with it. Planes with 2 heavy ones or 3 light people. abe

Did you purchase the dink yet?

Did you purchase the dink yet? Caribe (and probably some others) make lightweight RIB's with a single ply bottom. We have one of the heavier double bottom RIB's (Caribe). It has a 15 hp engine and makes getting around very convient. The engine is a little heavy, but depending on your needs the extra weight is worth it. The lighter the boat, the small engine that you will require.

8 HP + 9' inflateble will be more than fast enough

Not only will that combination plane, it will really move. We have a 10.5' inflatable (roll up) and an 8 HP (2 cycle), our combined weight is around 350 lbs. Never mind just planing, it has plenty more speed than that. only problem is weight. It's a real PITA to get it onto the rail. We have a 35 lb 3.5 hp Nissan for our journeys and for local fun we use the 8 HP. Have fun

planing

I have a 8.5 ft inflatable with 8 hp Evinrude. With one person it goes like hell. 2 people, goes good, will plane in flat water. 3 or more, forget it. Ain't gonna plane. If you want planing with 4 people you better get a 15 hp.
