I have a 1964 5 1/2 HP Jhonson outboat that has treated me well for 3 years. Last year I had the hoses replaced and tuned up. A few weeks ago I developed an air leak in the fuel system causing erratic starting and stalling...I replaced the connection from the fuel tank to the motor with a new clip and seams to have helped. the problem I am still having is although it does not stall any longer I do not have the power I had. While under power I will give it 1/4 throttle and it sounds like its smothering...then it perks up all by itself to a higher rev. like its gaining and loosing power. Any thoughts?...water in the gas??.gas oil mixture bad??..fuel pump about to go?? I cleaned the fuel filter yesterday with no help.....or is it just about time for a new engine 1964? Its tough finding someone to work on these old engines. Any help would be appriciated. thanks Rob

Sounds like the fuel tank is not built in. Did you try replacing the entire fuel line fron the tank to the motor(try to borrow one), some time the pump balls goes bad. Or borrow someons whole tank assembly just to try it out. Thats where I start before getting into the motor

bad fuel will cause the problems that you describe try a dose of "gumout" or some other carberator /fuel cleaner,and some new gas. then use a 1/2 dose all the time of gumout and stabalizer. todays gas is junk as will gum up a engine after just a few week old.don't give up on the engine just yet !

Fuel starved?
Whenever I forget to open my gas tank's vent I get a similar result with my 8hp Honda. The motor starts easy and idles well. Under load it lacks power and when given any amount of throttle it sounds like it's over revving. I now know what's happened and quickly open the gas tank vent. I think it's just the sound of a lean mixture. My chainsaw sort of does the same thing. As it starts to run out of gas it's tone goes way up and it sounds like it's over revving. It could be that your new hose or clip has a small blockage, limiting the gas flow and causing a lean mixure. I agree with Bill. Borrow another tank and hose. Swap around every tank/hose combo and see what eliminates the problem. Good luck.

Ive been reading about outboard repairs on the net today...and just as you said...the majority of causes are fuel related. I picked up some gumm out carb cleaner and some other marine fuel additive for 2 strokes. Ill start there. the ball and hose were fine last I checked last weekend. it may also be a hose in the engine. We shall see this weekend. Thanks Rob

yesterday I was down on the boat and tried a product named "Sea Foam" a fuel additive for the gas oil mix in our outboard. It is suppose to clean carbs, ellimiante water, and improve power, well it did all those and more, I also used some gummout spray in the carb....it must have been just gummed up because I added the sea Foam to the fuel gave the gummout a little spray, and let it run for about an hour,,,alternating the throttle every once in a whil. Latter I took it for a spin and it ran GREAT, no stalling no loss of power and idled perfectly. hats off to SEA FOAM and Gummout. now its almost ready to be winterized!!!
