All,
Any of you have an outboard motor mount on your stern rail? I'm looking to be able to install a mount suitable for an 8hp Tohatsu. Anyone have any good experiences/products I should look into?

This is just a place to store the motor? I think I would just make one out of plywood or Starboard.

Do the mounts typically have to me attached by a t-section? for weight distribution?

Actually, the picture does zero to show the construction of the mount. It's made from two pieces of 3/4" Starboard and bull nose routered inside with a 1" cutter to a depth of 1/2" in. on each plate to accept the 1" dia. tubing. And yes, they do intersect as a "T" inside the Starboard.

If you're into mechanical projections ............. this will give you a better idea of each side.

Ok,
Looking at the drw, it implies that the vertical tube just ends inside the starboard, and isn't attached to the rail. I can see that working, as the starboard won't be able to rotate. (Sorta cool) Just want to confirm that's what you did. Just don't think you welded it to the railing.

Unfortunately I don't have the tools nor the talent to construct such a mount. I guess I'm looking for product recommendations really.

Looks like Worst Marine has infringed on my original design and is now peddling them for $45.00. Call out the lawyers.

Mine's a cut above as the small cutout ensures the motor can't find itself sliding off the side of the mount. If your manhandling the motor on to the mount, that cutout really makes it easy to drop the motor into place when you can't see what you're doing beneath the motor.

I have the Edson one on my stern rail and I wish I had something that mounted the center of weight lower. The center of gravity on the motor with the Edson mount is 8 or 9 inches above the rail which makes the whole thing unstable due to the leverage of the weight of the motor on the railing. I have lashed the railing to my davits to stop it from bouncing around. The bracket above would be better as it puts the weight of the motor right on the rail. All that said the biggest problem on the 49 is there aren't many places where the rail isn't curved. So your location choices are limited.
