I am looking for a reasonably priced stern rail motor mount. I have a Beneteau 361 whose stern rail does not have a vertical rail to attach the bottom of the mount . I have a 4 HP Nissan motor which weighs in at about 50 lbs, so a mount which attaches to top and bottom rail is a must for stability. I do not want to pay $200 bucks for the Edson mount found in the West Marine catalogue, but it is the right design. Any body have any ideas?

Just buy the poly WM. Get tubing the size of what the missing vertical rail would have been. Get a rail fitting. Attach. You're in business. To cheap it, use aluminum tubing and get the correct size cable clamp... the kind with a rubber-like pad and a screw hole on each end. Put it on the rail, drill a hole in the tube and put a bolt through it with a locking nut. For a more sanitary job, use S/S tube and a split rail mount like that used for a bimini top and a tube end to fit. Rick D.

Bud another way to build a mount is to buy two white poly motor mounts and a piece of 1" ss tubing about 12" long . Fasten the one mount on the top rail where you want to mount the engine. Then loose fit the second mount on the lower rail right beneath the top mount. Cut the ss tube to fit in the slot between the top and bottom mounts ( where the vertical rail of the pushpit would be if you had one) then fit that ss tube up into the top mount and put the bottom mount together over the bottom rail and the ss tube. Sounds worse than it can be explained in writing. works great and you can adjust it back and forth on the pushpit until you get it where you want it.

Bud, I made this out of 12 gauge stainless and a glued up piece of pressure treated lumber. I used (5) 1" x #12 Stainless Sheet metal screws, from the back, to hikd the wood on the stainless. The stainless is formed in an upside down "U" on the top to hook over the top rail. The top of the wood block is fashioned to fit around the bottom of the rail. Let me know if you need more details. Sorry, I can not seem to upload a picture. I followed directions but something else must be involved.

What we did
We just had the same problem. We purchased the white poly motor mount, a piece of 1 inch stainless tubing and a 1 inch clamp (the kind you would use to make a bimini frame ... West Marine stocks 'em). You just cut the stainless tube to length, clamp it between the halves of the white poly motor mount and put the bimini frame clamp on the lower end and you''ve just make your own verticle post for the mount. Works and looks great. Gary

Buy a length of white plastic plumbing pipe the size of your rail. Also purchase a T fitting for it. Cut the "top" of the T in half. Cut a piece of pipe a little longer than the distance between the rails and cement your cut T fitting to it. Place the cut T over the lower rail and cut the pipe to exactly reach the top rail. Use a convantional motor mount and you are in business. We did this on our Catalina 36 which has the same problem. Other Catalina owners who are transient in our marina frequently admire this solution and want to know how to do it. We did this to use the teak mount retained from our prior boat.
