I am planning on installing an outboard motor mount on the 'Casual
Observer'. I am planning on buying a used 9.9 in good condition. I
would like to hear from others in this area.

Hi David,

We did the same thing for our boat, except we went with a Yamaha 4Hp
4stroke, long shaft, on a Garelick mount - with many adjustment
options. I am trying to save weight, and I don't think one needs a
stronger motor than that for marina tricks. I may add a 3 gal gas
tank later if I find it neccessary, but for now the gas goes direct
into the motor. (I carry 2 x 1 Gal Spare for easy refill)

Hi David,I installed a honda 9.9 h.p. extra long shaft 25inch with electic
start and its the best solution in my instance where the motor is only used
to get on and off a mooring when there's no wind. I would recommend the
Fulton line of mounts as they are really quite simple.I did not have to add
shims on the mount to offset the angle of the stern .Make sure the motor you
buy has a lot of adjustment or just add shims to the mount so the motor sits
upright. I also cut the middle piece of the aft "pushpit' off to accomodate
tipping the motor completly out of the water when sailing. and put rubber
stoppers on the ends that protrude about 3 inches off the upright still left
of the "pushpit'.This was a radical move both installing the motor and
cutting the 'pushpit' off.But I have no regets but remember if you cut the
stainless you are also cutting off the stern light so you'll have to make
some arrangements for a new one elseware on the stern. The reason I
installed the outboard motor was a rather frightening electricl fire
(probably caused by be) when I was dealing with water in the oil in the old
Albin gas motor and knocked off the gound causing the electric system to
self destruct.I also had a leaky gas tank (which I later discovered to be a
completly colapsed vent line).Needless to say it was time for the ole
inboard to go.This year I'm putting in a completely updated electrical panal
and rewiring the boat. All this said I Love the Vega its a great sailing
boat! Oh Yes make sure you put aluminum backing plates at least the size of
the swim ladder
ones when you mount the motor, better yet also put a few more layes of
fiberglass in the stern as well .I did not but would if I had to do it over
again. Hope this info helps you.
