I have a 1985 O'Day 26 which uses a 9.9 Yamama outboard. This engine weighs about 107 pounds and the lift, I believe these are also referred to as auxil- iary outboard brackets, that is now on the boat does not have enough spring power for one to easily lift it up out of the water. Has anyone had any experience with this problem? West Marine has two models, a Garelick with a 9.5 inch verticle lift and also one with a 15.5 inch vert- icle lift both stated to lift 170 to 175 pounds which should be sufficient for my engine. Has anyone had any experience with these products and do you think they could be mounted on my boat/motor? Appreciate any response. Thank you.

I assume it is a 4 stroke because of the weight - if it is - I have the same motor and I use the Garelick with the 9.5" lift - What you need to deal with is the footprint of the motor mount - may not fit - I have a '78 25' - that has the wedge on the transom - I attached a steel plate (better off with aluminum) to the bracket with an inch thick pressure treated wood - and then on the inside of the transom - reinforced the bracket with 4" x 4" 3/4" treated plywood - at each bolt - with oversized washers - in hindsight I would have used larger - stronger bolts - Here is a web link where I got the idea - look down the page at the external plate discussion - Good Luck!

Heavy outboards
I replaced my outboard bracket partially because the spring on the old one was shot. The result: the new spring made almost no difference. The fact is that the combination of the weight of the engine and the lack of leverage in pulling up on the bracket made it impossible for me raise the engine out of the water, new spring or old. I leave the bracket in the "down" position and tilt the engine out of the water. Much easier.

I also have a 1985 26 ftr. and actually just replaced the outboard bracket this spring. I have not put the boat in the water yet so I can not tell you how it works with my 2 stroke 8hp merc. i also have the fiberglass block on the transom, this garelick bracket mounts right up to the existing holes and I also beefed up the support in the hold. while down there we tightened all the screws, nuts and bolts that were visible.Pay strict attention to the gudgeons, it also helps to have 2 people present during this procedure.

I have the Garelick.
It is Awsome, super easy up and down. It is near effortless. The only concern you will have will be attaching it to the transom. My mounting block was rotted through and through. I had a buddy machine a piece UHMW plastic for this. It has multiple angles. I couldn't have made these cuts on my own even out of wood. I would have had to carve it. good luck you will love it. motor mount bracket
my 1976 25 has a garelick for 175# motor. I have to stand on the mount to get it down and cannot get to the last notch(15 inchish swing). when I release it, it comes up ahellin'. that's with no motor on. the day I brought it home it was diffucult to lower in order to remove the motor. gene

Outboard motor lift.
I also had lots of problems lifting the 10 hp Honda, but after adding some grease to the moving parts it was better. Still a hard lift so I added a short piece of line threaded through a piece of copper pipe (for a handle)so that I could easily stand and lift rather than bending over the transome.
