Outboard
I have a 2hp Honda which I use on both my O'day 192 (1400 lbs) and my Potter 15 (500 lbs). The little Honda is a great motor - it's perfect for the Potter but is just a tad small for use on the 192. It will push that boat into 20 kts. of wind but if there is more wind than that, I have to motorsail. It's true that the onboard tank doesn't hold much fuel but the motor gets close to 30 mpg so it still runs about 90 minutes on that one tankful. With a little foresight you will never run out at a critical time. If you sail in salt water, a real advantage of the little Honda is that it is air-cooled and does not require flushing out with fresh water after use.If you prefer to have more power, a 3.5 hp Tohatsu/Nissan/Mercury 4 stroke has been recently introduced that weighs just under 40 lbs. That is 20 lbs. less than the 4hp at just a 0.5 hp penalty.
