How do you do -- new friends. I am a new owner of an old, but beautiful DaySailer II. I have inquired about the maximum size outboard motor recommended for the boat. I've heard a range from 3 HP to 10 HP. I'd like to acquire the maximum, because I will be going against the current of The Hudson River at times. Can anyone please give me the proper information? Can anyone help? Much obliged. Manypeaks

Outboard motor size for Daysailer two

According to this "I love O'Days" web site that I'm giving you, they recommend an outboard of up to an 8 Hp. I think that an 8 is really too big and heavy for your boat even in the two stroke. You could possibly get away with a smaller four stroke 4 HP engine for your boat. I'm using a Johnson Sailmaster long shaft 2-stroke engine to power my O'Day 222.

I used a 5 hp and could get it up on a plane, but found that it was too heavy for sailing. A 2.5 hp is more than adequate.

Outboard

I have a 2hp Honda which I use on both my O'day 192 (1400 lbs) and my Potter 15 (500 lbs). The little Honda is a great motor - it's perfect for the Potter but is just a tad small for use on the 192. It will push that boat into 20 kts. of wind but if there is more wind than that, I have to motorsail. It's true that the onboard tank doesn't hold much fuel but the motor gets close to 30 mpg so it still runs about 90 minutes on that one tankful. With a little foresight you will never run out at a critical time. If you sail in salt water, a real advantage of the little Honda is that it is air-cooled and does not require flushing out with fresh water after use. If you prefer to have more power, a 3.5 hp Tohatsu/Nissan/Mercury 4 stroke has been recently introduced that weighs just under 40 lbs. That is 20 lbs. less than the 4hp at just a 0.5 hp penalty.
