What size outboard motor came with the Hunter 23 originally? Any idea of how much the outboard weighed or what weight the transom can support safely. I have a 9.9 Bigfoot Mercury and it seems too heavy for the stern. Thanks John

My h23 came with a 2-cycle Nissan 5hp longshaft as original equipment. Just picking it up it feels like about 50 lbs. According to Nissan's online owners manual (mine's at the boat), it weighs 20.5kg, which my calculator says that works out to just over 45 lbs. dry weight. By the way, 5hp is plenty for pushing a h23 at or near hull speed. The Nissan continues to work great. As a side note, my outboard mechanic said that it was designed for use by near shore fisherman in asia, with the expectation it would be used for long hours every day, so its a tough little engine.
Having said all this, its possible that Hunter used other outboards as original equipment during the h23 production run. We know that they used three different makes of mast, so its possible that other things changed over the length of the run.

John, that 9.9 is way bigger than needed for your 23 as you suspect. I think it weighs in the 100-120 lb range.

I use a 9.9 Tohatsu 2 cycle for offshore; weighs 95lbs. Removed and stowed on trailer frame while towing.
