Extensions for the motor length have been mentioned from time to time here but I had never found a source. I finally found one. Bay Manufacturing has them for Mercury, Yamaha, Johnson and Evinrude and will soon have them for Tohatsu as well. I asked the Mercury dealer they had never heard of such a thing and the when they did find one it replaces the entire shaft then they could not tell me if it took the motor from a 15" to a 20" or from a 20" to a 25". The ones from bay have a shaft extension and will extend whatever you have 5". The kit for my motor is $320 so not too bad and they say anyone who changes out their own impeller can handle this job too. There have been lots of days when that extra 5" would have been handy like wanting to motor sail when on a port tack, when the bay gets choppy or coming in the East Pass. I am going to order one soon and will report back on how it went.

Not as easy as it sounds
When converting a short shaft to a long shaft outboard, you need to remove and replace both the shaft, and the raw water intake tube and shift mechanism. It could be quite hard or easy depending on who made it. What year, hp, and model is your outboard?

I put a Yahama 8hp on my H26 last year when someone decided they needed my Honda worse than I did. (By the way, the Yahama is a much better motor). But because I needed it rather promptly, I settled on the long shaft rather than ordering the extra long shaft. Have noticed that it could stand to be a bit longer. Plan to build a “cavitation plate” to see if that will help first.
