Hello, I have a 1987 Hunter 23 and a new 8hp 4-stroke outboard motor. The motor weighs about 100 pounds, which is not too much more than the weight 2-stroke (with electric start) that it replaced. I would like to replace the outboard bracket and have looked at the products from Garelick. The Garelick site suggests that some of their brackets should not be used with 4-strokes. However, several of their "2-stroke" products have weight limits that are appropriate for my new outboard. Garelick's "4-stroke" brackets are much more expensive, much bigger, and have weight limits well in excess of what this motor would require. Can anyone tell me if there's anything more to Garelick's 4-stroke bracket models than the weight capacity? Are there any clearance issues specific to 4-strokes? Can I hang my 4-stroke off a 2-stroke bracket without running into trouble down the road? Thanks in advance!

The bracket doesn't know the difference...

The bracket's load capacity is all that counts as far as a bracket is concerned. Your transom is another matter. Don't hang too much weight back there without reinforcing your transom. I glassed 3/4" marine plywood reinforcement in place before hanging a Garelick bracket on my H23. Else, the transom can flex and it can crack. Check the archives... it has been a few years since I read the thread that lead me to reinforcing my own transom.

Torque

I belive its the torque that makes a big differance in mounts. I have the original (which i need to replace sometime) and i and stand on it with my engine on it and not bend, but when i fire up my 4-stroke it bends! my 2-stroke didnt do that. i dont know though just my guess
