I would like to replace the factory bracket with one of those that can raise the outboard motor up and out of the warter rather than just tipping it up. Any suggestions on models to use or avoid.
It depends on what type (2 stroke or 4 stroke)of motor and the weight. Last summer I brought a bracket from Boater's World, with the help of the clerk, for an 8hp 4 stroke for weights up to 120 pounds. I should have purchased the next higher level bracket because the springs are not strong enough to assist with lifting the engine up. If you have a 4 stroke go with the higher level model it will save your back. Fair winds.
Even if you have a 2 stroke the heavy duty is not much more money and you never know when you will upgrade to a 4. I just installed an alumninum one which is working out very well but my boatyard strongly recommended stainless. They said it would last longer. I just couldn't find one.
I installed a Garhauer on a H25 several years ago and it is great.I think they make/did make the mounts for several manufacturers including Catalina but they will sell direct.Don't have their ph # but you should be able to pull them up.
I have a hunter that the mount we replaced and is to low for my engine. I would like to go back to the orginal mount. If you replace yours, are willing to sell you old one?
If your engine bracket is the old U-shaped fiberglass bracket then I would definitly replace it. On my 23.5 (which I no longer have) the bracket had hairline cracks in it, which water got into and soak the interior wood structure. I never notice until one day I was out and motoring (there was no wind) and I wasn't moving too well. When I looked at the outboard it was tilted down about 20 degrees. The bracket was bending and I thought I was going to loose the engine. I tied a line to the handle and headed back to the marina. I lost about 3 weeks of sailing as I had to order a engine mount, remove the old one and install the new one.
Good investment, but what a pain! You will need to fabricate angled stand-offs to get the motor straight, I used mahagony and it worked out OK.If I remember, I will measure the 2 pieces, save you lots of X!@#$%^.
