Outboard Motor Bracket

Mine needs updated/replaced and the OP installation of the existing mount results in the mounting board dragging in the water when deployed. While it hasn't been an issue, it seems to me that could exert a lot of force as you are moving through the water - in addition to holding the motor weight, there is added weight from the pressure of the water. It does not seem as if it was installed in the proper location.

I've looked at West Marine and Amazon and there appear to be a myriad of options. I do not want to drill new holes to mount a new bracket if that can be avoided - and I probably should have done this before I just painted just in case it cannot be avoided - but I'm in the market for a new motor mount bracket.

Because of the dragging issue, I believe I need multiple adjustments. I want stainless steel and not aluminum (I think).

Has anyone replaced a motor mount bracket recently and do you have a good recommendation for a make/model/retail outlet for a motor mount.

I just went through a motor mount issue, but a couple of photo's would answer a bunch of questions.

Flamingo: go see Tom at the Sailboat Shop. He usually has the motor mounts in stock -and I've watched his guys replace them on C-22s in no time flat. He sometimes has used mounts as well.

I will be going up to the boatyard tomorrow morning - you can look at the mount on my 1981 if you like.

Flamingo - if you are interested in meeting at Lake Pleasant tomorrow, call my cell: 602-363-5634. Tom stocks Garhauser stainless steel motor mounts. A few months ago I watched his guys replace a tired old mount on a C-22. They removed the old one, plugged the old holes with epoxy (or whatever it was), drilled new holes so the new mount was properly positioned, and installed it covering up the area where the old holes were. Looked great, and that C-22 owner was really happy.

I am planning to go up to the lake tomorrow morning, but can be flexible with timing.

Bob,

My apologies. I wasn't on line this weekend and just saw your posts. I wish I had seen them sooner, I would have joined you at Lake Pleasant on Saturday.

Catalina Direct.com carries one by Garhaur. I have a O Day 22 and replaced mine last year with a Garlick with the 15"travel. The problem with that one is the springs are rated for a motor up to 175lbs. I think and they are way to stiff to put the motor in the lowest position. I wish I would have gotten the one from Catalina Direct it was only rated to 115lbs.

Hi Tim: I saw Tom at the lake today - he joined the AYC cook-out after the race. He said that you and he had a good talk about your motor mount, so hopefully you're on the way to getting that fixed.

The C-22 fleet ran the committee boat and cook-out today, so no sailing for us. But, the club had some nice wind and a good couple of races on the lake, which was great.

Take care.

I did talk to Tom and I'm having them do a couple of jobs on the boat this week including replacing the mast-step plate. My 1972 Cat 22 still has the original aluminum mast-step plate which, I understand, was notorious for failing. I'm having a nice stainless replacement installed. Yes, I could do it myself, but I would have to find assistance taking the mast down and putting it back up - so I thought I may as well just have it all done.

At the same time, I am having them replace my halyards. I have partial wire halyards which I am replacing with all line but, more importantly, my previous owner had installed a single halyard running to both main and jib. I won't try to explain again, but picture one continuous line with wire halyards at each end - one running to connect to jib, one running to connect to the main. So, my main halyard and jib halyard were not only the same color, but the same line. Not only confusing, it was also a bit messy.

Back to the outboard motor bracket - I talked to Tom at the Sailboat Shop before visiting my boat on Saturday and discussed the motor mount situation. He asked which mounting holes the PO used to install the existing bracket and suggested just moving the mount up one (or two) sets of holes. The wooden plate to which my motor attaches only drags an inch or two in the water, so that seemed like a good and easy fix, but he then warned that many people use the corner bracket holes because they think it more stable. And that is exactly what had happened. No adjustment left in the bracket - see pics - I rotated and saved these pictures, but uploading them seems to automatically rotate them back.

Nevertheless, this mount isn't very good. Raising and lowering is a process due, in part, to the fact that there isn't really a handle on the release bar. I'm strongly considering this: http://www.amazon.com/Garelick-EEz-...C_UL160_SR95,160_&refRID=0M12QYGHKGZYD6S8QZ2Y

That may be the project for Saturday.

Hi Tim: I hadn't heard that mast steps were failure modes on some of the older boats - interesting. Good to have the Sailboat Shop replace it. Mine was damaged last summer, and I had a rigger in San Diego replace my mast step. In future, if you need a hand dropping / raising your mast at the lake, give me a shout. I'm up there almost every weekend ... Until it gets hot. I've also had Tom and his crew help me with my mast raising / lowering - he's never charged me for a few minutes of labor to help with that.

Wow, your halyard seems like a real science project. I had Tom replace my wire+rope halyards several years ago. Keep the cable wire from the discarded halyard - it's handy for cleaning out the old style scuppers now and again.

I was on the AYC committee boat last weekend - the club had some really nice sailing ... Maybe the first time this year. Nice winds, and some exciting races. There were a few C-22s on the lake enjoying the windy conditions too!

I will be up at the lake sometime this weekend, at least for awhile. Shout if you need a hand.

Take care.
