Outboard Motor Battery Charging

I've tried to get this info from Evinrude/Johnson sites, but very little info is available for little motors. I'm sure the 1978 7.5hp (Model # E8SRLCTA) can charge a battery, but don't know which wires ect. . The Service Manual I bought has wiring diagrams and how to overhaul everything, but no basics. Any help will be appreciated. Thx Rudy AZ

My book only shows diagrams as '78-79 6hp. 7.5hp runs '80-81, both rope start. All electric start motors can charge a battery, and it will be obvious which wires to use (the battery leads). Manual start motors will only provide juice for the ignition coils. Some newer manual start engines have charging options that can be installed by the dealer. Maybe one exists for yours. I use the Outboard Motor Shop here in the SF bay area. (800) 726-2848. They service OMC and can tell you if it is possible.

Charging a battery...

If the engine doesn't have some sort of generator/alternator, it won't charge a mattery. Draining off the small output it uses to fire the engine would only cause it to not run.It's possible that somewhere you can find a generator/alternator for your engine, if you can find one that was OEM. Retrofitting one would be pretty complicated. You can always buy a new engine that has a charger...of course that gets pretty expensive.Josh
