Outboard Mix Ratio

I now own an O'Day 22 which I plan to use next summer. It came with a Johnson 7 or 8 hp 2 stroke. I would guess I will be mixing my own. Does anyone know the ratio of oil to gas? Thanks.

50:1

I have a Johnson 9.9 and it is 50:1. I mix it at 40:1, you change the plugs a little more often (every year), but the lubrication is better. Check with a power boat store to be sure. Ric "comes a time" New Hampshire

What year?

The model year of the outboard may be a clue to the oil ratio. Check the Model # on the outboard, it is on a plate fastened to the mounting bracket. If the motor was made after 1979 (ie: 1980 or newer) then there is a code for the model year, the last 2 letters in the model# indicate the year. Write the word INTRODUCES on a paper, then write the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 underneath, the model# will be like "J10RET", that is the model# of my 1993 9.9. J = Johnson (E = Evinrude), 10 = 9.9, R = rope start, ET = 93 (E = 9 and T = 3). The 1985 thru 1987 model years used a 100/1 ratio (I'd still use 50/1), all other years used 50/1. Your owners manual should tell you what the correct mixture is. You say that the motor is a 7 or 8 horse, I would suspect that it is a 6hp, but might be a 7.5 or 8, depending on year. (6hp 1966-79, 1984-present) (7.5hp 1980-83) (8hp 1984-present) All or these motors built were essentially the same engine from 1980-present.

Rod, here is the Model #

Rod, thanks very much as I do not have an owners Mnaual. The Model # is te8rl cec. Can you tell me what year that is so I can order a manual? It is an Evinrude 8.

Bombardier, not OMC

I think this is either a 1989 or 1998? (I suspect 1998) If the shift lever is on one side and the tiller is offset to the other, it is a 1989. If the shift is on the front and so is the tiller, its a 1998. A local Evinrude or Johnson Dealer will be able to order a manual for you, I would think. OMC went bankrupt in 2001 and Bombardier motors bought the Evinrude and Johnson outboards divisions. Bombardier is now building the outboards in a state of the art factory in Wisconsin. They are doing their best to supply parts for our older outboards (pre-Bombardier). If you don't have a local dealer, contact Defender Industries in Waterford, CT. http://www,defender.com I know that they sell the manuals and factory service manuals as well. The model # reads: (not sure what the "T" is?) E=Evinrude, 8= 8hp, R=rope-start, L= long-shaft, C= sailmaster? EC=98. The Sailmaster 8hp had a 25" shaft and a battery-charging coil (4 Amp)
