What year?
The model year of the outboard may be a clue to the oil ratio. Check the Model # on the outboard, it is on a plate fastened to the mounting bracket. If the motor was made after 1979 (ie: 1980 or newer) then there is a code for the model year, the last 2 letters in the model# indicate the year. Write the word INTRODUCES on a paper, then write the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 underneath, the model# will be like "J10RET", that is the model# of my 1993 9.9. J = Johnson (E = Evinrude), 10 = 9.9, R = rope start, ET = 93 (E = 9 and T = 3).The 1985 thru 1987 model years used a 100/1 ratio (I'd still use 50/1), all other years used 50/1. Your owners manual should tell you what the correct mixture is.You say that the motor is a 7 or 8 horse, I would suspect that it is a 6hp, but might be a 7.5 or 8, depending on year. (6hp 1966-79, 1984-present) (7.5hp 1980-83) (8hp 1984-present) All or these motors built were essentially the same engine from 1980-present.
