I know this is not quite the correct forum but I will ask anyway.I have a older Evinrude outboard engine.I my infinate wisdom I thought I would try and replace the water pump impeller. After all it way easy on the big boat why not the little boat? Anyway I can not get the lower unit to disconect from the mid section housing. Was able to remove all the bolts ok and was able to drop the unit about 1 inch but could not get it to seperate. I remembered something about haveing to put the engine in gear, tried that and still no luck. Any body have any ideas? I know it is not quite a sailing question but I know there is a lot of good info here. Thanks for any help!

I can only tell you how to do a Yamaha, sorry.

But the one thing I've learned about equipment is that it is just what it seems to be. A machine. The soulution is there. You just have to find it. It might be quicker though, to call a shop.

You might try the Mastertech, an o/b parts shop at http://www.maxrules.com. The owner is very knowledgeable and helpful and he sells all OMC parts and manuals. If you purchase a manual I expect he'll be happy to advise on tricks of the trade.

Model?

Sounds like you might be working on a older 5.5 or 6 HP. If so there is a pin in the top of the drive shaft that runs perp. to the shaft. Apply slight down presure on the lower unit rotate the flywheel slowly to let the pin drop thru a notch below the powerhead. If that is not the model, please supply more info on what your are working on. Don't forget to remove the spark plug leads so the engine will not start by accident.
