Just bought myslef a used outboard today and went to change the lower unit transmission oil but came across a small problem. My outboard is a Nissan, and all I have is a brand new bottle of Mercury lower unit oil. Is this oil interchangable or should I go look for Nissan specific. These outboards are the same horsepower and I have no manual to check so I'm kinda guessing what I should do. Thanks for the help. Travis

I put Mercury into my Honda 9.9a

It's called "Mercury High Performace Gear Lube". It's blue. I hope it's OK; I just put it in for the second time... ...RickM...

The only consideration is ...

... compatability with the seals. You can go online to Nissan and get the specs for their lower units (and everything else for that matter). I have a Nissan 9.9 and use Pennzoil gear lube. It meets Nissan's specs.

Not sure about the oil, but you might find a copy of your manual online, I know I found my 9.9 on here...
