Outboard location

I just saw a 2012 Capri 22 with the motor mounted on the Port Side. I thought all Capri had the motor mounted on the Starboard side and the Swim Ladder on the Port side. I believe all Catalina 22 have the motor mounted on the Port side. I am I dreaming?

I thought in a previous post someone stated Catalina switched sides with the outboard because,
when the motor was up It blocked the rear running light.

Of course at almost 67 years of age my brain cells are a little rusty.

I think some outboards have their control arms on the right side and others on the left side.

My San Juan 21 had it's motor mounted on the port side.

All the new Capri 22s I have seen are STB mounted. A friends late model Catalina 22 is port mounted with the swim ladder STB. I'am ordering sans mount until I decide the outboard, thinking Tohatsu 6hp 25".

Inthedoldrums,
Are you really thinking of not ordering an outboard motor bracket with your new boat ? It isn't something easily added after the fact. I say have the factory put on an outboard bracket for whenever you choose to put whatever outboard motor.

That is true. Not sure when the switch occurred, but my CP22 #1258 which left the factory in Jan 2012 has the stern light and swim ladder on the stbd side and the motor mount on the port side.

As I understand it (as least in late 2011 when I was researching CP22's), the factory always mounts the swim ladder as the boat is being built. It is considered "standard equipment". Every CP 22 comes with a ladder.

If you are using the Tohatsu 6hp with 25-inch shaft (which I am also using and love), you will want the motor mount mounted higher on the stern then all the other CP 22's using a 20-inch shaft. Having the extra long shaft and higher placed motor mount means the power head is at a very nice high reachable place for operation. You will also need the extra mounting height to be able to get the prop of the Tohatsu out of the water, particularly on a stbd tack when the motor is on the "downhill" side.

I mounted my motor mount as high as possible with the top of the mounting bracket just under the stern rub rail. I will try to find some pictures that show this setup.

You will also want to add a couple of inspection ports, one in fuel locker and one above the seat, to allow access to front face of the stern to install the mounting bolt nuts for the motor mount. Even with the access ports, it is still a tight (but very doable) fit. I used large fender washers along with the bolts to spread the load out as much as possible.

Funny about the mounting of the swim ladder. # 297 was mounted as stated above. ( Only one portal inside the gas locker) But on my #427 the bolts go all the way through both the hull and the cockpit. A lot easier to get at. I remember going through the portal to get at the nuts for #297 was very close to impossible. Both boats are 1985's.

That does sound easier.

But it brings up the question "how do you reinforce (i.e. take up the space between stern and cockpit liner) that set up? Without some thing in between the liner and the stern, aren't you pulling the liner back toward the stern?

On #1258, there looks to be about a one and one-half inch space between the liner and the front face of the stern.

Its hard to believe that they relocated the motor, to the Port Side, because of the Stern Light, because after all 99% of sailing on these boats is done during the day! I think it has more to do with weight distribution. The original location put the motor= 5hp Honda 60lbs. plus one 12v battery=45lbs, and miscellaneous stuff in the storage locker=10lbs, total= 115lbs on the Starboard Side. Of course this situation could get worst with a larger motor! While the Port Side only had the Swim Ladder and 2-6 gals of gas, approximate 12-40lbs. By moving the motor to the Port Side (60lbs) the weight is more evenly distributed. Assuming 2 gals of fuel average, 12lbs plus 60lbs motor = total 72lbs, Starboard now has Battery 45lbs plus miscellaneous 10lbs, total 55lbs. Its interesting because I considered doing this on our 2006 Capri 22, before I saw that Cataline must have been thinking the same thing.

Well I have a MK I with a 35 lb outboard mounted on the starboard side. My garden size tractor battery is mounted on the port side just aft of the V birth bulkhead. Gas Tank 4 gallons. Anchor and rode close to the bow of the boat.

If you look at the waterline growth from sitting at a mooring for six months, it appears that the boat is stern heavy.

go figure?
