Outboard leg lenght

When't out to the boat today . Just serviced and put the outboard on last week .
Companion way lock missing . Thought that was strange nothing missing that I could see so assumed I left it that way. Then on returning to the cockpit noticed the outboard was gone.
Lock cut, all cables for edson binnacle and even battery cable cut.
The engine had no tiller so it's paper weight unless they put new control cables and power cables.

So my question moving forward from the creeps is what leg size . Going to order a Yamaha 9.9 high output. ( low leg gearing ) to choices . 20 or 25. . My nissan had a 20 leg I believe.
Should I stay with the same size or go to the 25 inch leg. ??

I have the Yamaha T9.9 High Thrust. Great OB. Almost all sailboat recommendations I've read say 25" to ensure the prop stays in the water. Shifter is on the tiller just behind the throttle so it is handy. If you have the funds, consider the power tilt. It's a great back saver. Don't even need to raise the mount to get the OB out of the water.

The 20 inch shaft will suffice in flat calm waters but if you are in a lot of waves for example the ocean, the 25 inch length is more desirable but caution is urged when launching or loading boat onto trailer.

As for your loss, do report this theft to the police and insurance carrier. Most who steal things like that are trying to sell and generally the big flea markets and Craigs List are usual places to look. If you find your engine, alert the police taking no action on your part. You life is more important.

We had the Honda 9.9 long shaft on our H260 and would recommend it for a new motor. Found it provided better thrust in all sea conditions. As far as launching just keep it raised until in the water and raise it before coming out.

MaxinCalgary,
Sorry for what's happen to you, can't believe that someone would do something like that.
I bought a new Honda 9.9 hp with electric starter, 12 A alternator, tiller and 25 inch shaft drive length.
I am going to bold that engine to the mount, make it more difficult to get it stolen.

On the same note.
I need new cables for my remote throttle and gear lever. Edson binnacle with edson levers. What length cables do I order. 2002 260.

Maxin Calgary;

3300 series cables and 11 foot length needed. I was the main dealer for this boat.

Jim Seamons;

Oops misspelled last name as usual big brother. Give me a call and thanks for confirming my information. I hate to see when motors are stolen and it also happened at my dealership too. I found one at a flea market and smiled when the fellow was led away in pretty bracelets.

Check out the Tohatsu engines, at the moment I believe they have the best high thrust "low gear" options with their 8" symmetrical 4 blade oversized hub props (not sure if the prop fits other brands of engines outside the Tohatsu family or not)... I put one on my old 8hp 2 stroke and both by the numbers and by feel, it's about a 60% increase in power/thrust. Top and speed isn't much different (pretty much hull speed), but it accelerates the boat up to speed MUCH faster, stop the boats at the dock very quickly, reverses very well, and powers through chop and waves vastly better.

Tohatsu makes many small engines most notably Tohatsu of course, Nissan and mercury. I have what appears to be Tohatsu parts in other engines to include Honda.

In Canada cannot see a Tohatsu high thrust option. The Merc big foot 25" is more expensive than the Yamaha? Their is a good local Yamaha dealer close by. ( that was a problem with the Nissan. It's the same as the Merc but the local dealers seem not to have any cross reference for buying parts.) Honda outboards have to be bought from the motorcycle store from the catalogue . Not ideal. The 18hp Nissan I had was ok forward at half throttle , but reverse was marginal at best . Hope the low gearing , big blade on the T9.9 works out. This time putting a transom plate lock on and a bolt lock on the transom plate. They will hopefully just move on if it looks to much trouble

The high thrust for Tohatsu and its family of brands is just a special prop, but it makes a HUGE difference... and reverse is just as good as forward!

The manuals for the smaller Merc and Nissan are the same as Tohatsu. I proved that often with many folks when I was a dealer now retired. So when I could not get a merc part, I ordered from Tohatsu and mighty funny they were identical.

Please post a picture when the new engine is mounted. I also would like to make it harder to steal my new, shiny outboarder.
