Hi all, I just changed the impeller on my 1990 johnson outboard to get better water flow and I'm seeing water only trickle out of the hose that comes out of the engine, however there's a decent amount of water coming out of the muffler, is this normal? Thanks, -solman

Try the Johnson/Evisrude forum on iboats.com. They have an area for repair questions. Very helpful.

It Could Be

okay. I had this happen to me years back and I was afraid the engine was overheating. I also had plenty of water coming out of exhaust. I called a mechanic and he said that the upper hose was basically your visual indicater. What he told me to do was blow the hose out with a compresser. Often times they get some sea weed or other things in them from the water. This took care of it for me. I had and still have a nice water flow! Hope this will also work for you! Cheers, Brian

Thanks Brian

Yeah, That's what someone else just told me on iboats.com. I hope it's just that easy! I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks, SolMan

Cooling Johnson 8hp

Two things may affect the water amount comming out of the hose. 1: the niple/hose is blocked(as mentined above) 2: The thermostat does not close and there by lets the water just pass through. Be sure you have the tell tale working. When the thermostat is closed the water does not pass through the engine but throgh the tell tale. This is not as many belives an indicator, but the water is necesseary to cool off the exhaust cover and pistons!

Tell Tale - Thermostat - haffiman37

The nipple wasn't plugged up. I still need to check the hose itself, but the nipple was clear.. Coud the thermostat have gone bad if the engine had over heated with no water flow? And if so, could it be stuck in a bad position, not allowing the water to flow properly? Should I have changed the thermostat when I changed the impeller? Is there somekind of maintenance i need to do with the thermostat other than replacing it? Thanks, -SolMan

Pops

quick and easy tool

For some reason, the little hole on my outboard and my dock buddy's clog frequently. It was a constant hassle trying to find something to clean it with until my buddy came up with a great idea. He attached ten inches of weed eater line to each of our key chains. It works great, better than wire, and is always available as it's permanently attached to the key chain (If dropped while cleaning the hole it floats as of course I have one of the floaty things on the key already).
