Looking for a neat way to bring battery power (below deck), through the cockpit fiberglass to my electric start outboard on my Hunter 23.5 sailboat. A topside waterproof, disconnect feature would be desirable. I once saw a neat hookup on a Catalina 27, but can find no products, connector , boots, etc., for sale to accomplish this.

Trolling motor plug

I had a perfect sized hole already cut in the fuel tank compartment on the aft starboard side of the boat. The PO just ran an 8g wire direct to the o/b and this didn't look too acceptable. Found a Marinco trolling motor plug that fit the hole. When unplugged, the receptacle has a rubber cap to cover same and there's an o-ring on the male side of the plug to seal things up when connected. It'll be a few days before I get back up to the boat, but will be happy to take some pictures and forward them. Really a simple hookup.

8 ga wire sounds insufficient for Outboard (9.8HP) Starting Current.

Cowl Connectors

Try an International Truck dealer. They have block heater plug-ins for the bumper that can be flush mounted that will handle a guage wire that will handle the load and they have cowl connectors that will too.

8g wire

Well... 8g wire is what my Yamaha 9.9 manual schematic drawing shows. I think I'll defer to their knowledge of their product.

Thanks, but these connectors only allow for a water tight passing of a round cable into a junction box, or panel. They don't provide an electrical disconnect feature.

Harness Connector

Your Outboard Engine Manufacturer will have a connector for their specific wiring harness, though it may not be a “bulkhead mounting” (transom, in your case) type.
